Manchester United have reportedly called off their pursuit of Mats Hummels.

The Daily Star claims Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has ended his interest in Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels.

Hummels has been constantly linked with a move to United over the past few months, but it appears that LvG has called time on his pursuit of the German which means he’s likely to now consider other options.

“According to fresh reports, Van Gaal has ended his interest in the German,” claims the Star.

“Sources in Russia claim the Dutchman has turned his attention to signing Zenit St Petersburg defender Ezequiel Garay.”

Van Gaal has been forced to watch a very inconsistent Manchester United defence so far this season.

At times the back four has been opened up and at other times, the backline has looked solid as they did against Chelsea last weekend.

There are several options for van Gaal to consider if reports that he’s no longer interested in Hummels are accurate.

Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar is a potential target along with Ezequiel Garay, with the Dutchman arguably better suited due to his relationship with LvG and his Premier League experience.

Marcos Rojo has adjusted to a left sided centre-back role but United could still use an extra body in that area of their squad, but it seems it’s unlikely to be Hummels, which will be music to the ears (or eyes) of any other interested linked with the BVB skipper.

It would have been a difficult deal for United to pull off for different reasons because Hummels has made his allegiance to Dortmund clear.

However, their difficult start to the season has cast doubt over the futures of their key players, but it could just be the case that van Gaal sees a pursuit of Hummels as something which is simply just too difficult.
