Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher revealed that he doesn’t trust Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen on Monday Night Football.
Speaking on the regular Sky Sports show, Carragher and colleague Gary Neville, were critical of the Belgian defender, with Carragher suggesting that Vertonghen has to do more to conform to his reputation.
“Look at the amount of money PSG paid for David Luiz – central defenders are being bought for millions and they need to do more.”
Vertonghen is one of the players Neville was critical of for the build up to Newcastle’s goal last weekend, which came straight after the half-time break.
Vertonghen was seen talking to left-back Danny Rose as Newcastle kicked-off launching a ball down the channel for Sammy Ameobi to run onto before he produced a slick finish to score.
“Vertonghen and Rose, they’re just having a chat – That is unacceptable,” added Neville.
Vertonghen has made it clear that he wants to play champions League football and hasn’t ruled out leaving Tottenham to achieve that aim.
However, with basic mistakes appearing in the Tottenham defence, the chances of a top four finish could dwindle due to needless and avoidable errors.
It’s impossible for the midfield and attack to continuously bail the side out when the defence isn’t switched on at key moments and ready for situations when they know the opposition are going to come at them hard.
Vertonghen may feel as though he should have been given the captain’s armband ahead of Younes Kaboul and if that’s the case, he needs to step up and prove why he’s Tottenham’s best player and subsequently why he should have been given that role.
