Everton secured a 3-1 win against Burnley on Sunday, with manager Roberto Martinez choosing to rotate his side after a tough trip to France to face Lille in the Europa League on Thursday. One of the players rested at Turf Moor was midfielder James McCarthy, and the Republic of Ireland international says he is benefiting from the rotation.
"The rotation helps, obviously," said the former Wigan star, "People can say three games in a week, you’re a professional, it’s your job and so on, but it can be hard coming back from places like Lille and going again for another game. But we were delighted with the resulting team performance and the three points up at Burnley."
Meanwhile, defender John Stones has emerged as one of Everton's key players over the last year. The 20-year-old, who signed for the Toffees from Barnsley in January 2013, broke into the first team last season and ended up on the standby list for England's World Cup campaign.
With a growing reputation, Stones' impressive performances at Goodison Park has led to him being named on the shortlist for this year's Golden Boy award, alongside the likes of Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers and Raheem Sterling.
FInally, the Toffees had been linked with a move to re-sign winger Gerard Deulofeu from Barcelona in recent weeks. The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Everton from the Catalan giants, but was sent out on loan to Sevilla this season with Barca boss Luis Enrique still wanting him to mature.
However, any Everton hopes of landing him in January have been dealt a major blow after reports in Spain suggested that Atletico Madrid are eyeing up a move to sign the youngster in January.
