The crucial aspect Chris Powell has brought to Huddersfield

Chris Powell has overseen a remarkable turnaround at Huddersfield Town, with one crucial aspect returned to the ranks.

Since being appointed Huddersfield Town manager on September 3, Chris Powell has suffered just two Championship defeats and currently has his side on a six-match unbeaten run.

Things have come a long way at the John Smith’s Stadium since Mark Robins was ushered through the exits following a 4-0 hammering by Bournemouth on the opening day of the season.

Fears were rightly aired at that stage, with a potentially pivotal decision taken after just 90 minutes of competition.

Time was taken to ensure that the next call was the right one, with former Charlton Athletic boss Powell answering the SOS call.

He has brought a certain x-factor with him to west Yorkshire, with Huddersfield now difficult to beat and brimming with confidence – as shown by their 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town on Saturday when they hit back from two goals down to claim a share of the spoils.

What, though, is Powell doing differently?

According to loan star Grant Holt, the answer is simple – Powell has merely returned the feel-good factor to the ranks and got Huddersfield playing with a smile on their face.

He said in the Examiner: “The manager has come in and given people belief. He wants smiley faces and he wants you to enjoy your football – and he has done that.

“He tells us to be together, talk to each other, do it as a team and you can see the results. If anything, we have been a bit unlucky with a couple of draws which might have been wins.”

The information in the Opta stats table below shows that since Powell took charge, ahead of week six, Huddersfield are generally having to put in fewer tackles, as they are seeing more of the ball, are conceding fewer goals and are getting in more attempts.

That can only be a good thing as they endeavour to put clear daylight between themselves and the drop zone and start to spend more time looking upwards than over their shoulder.
