Lou Macari urges United youngster James Wilson to stay grounded

Manchester United legend Lou Macari has offered some words of advice to highly-rated teenager James Wilson.

Many regard 18-year-old striker James Wilson as the best prospect to come out of the prestigious United academy in recent years.

The youngster has been scoring for fun in United's youth and under-21 teams for the past few seasons and has been rewarded with a number of appearances in the first team, including a late cameo appearance in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Sunday.

With Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck no longer at the club, Wilson is considered United's fourth choice striker this season behind Van Persie, Rooney and Falcao and could yet be in for a big season at Old Trafford.

Club legend, Lou Macari, who made 329 appearances for the Red Devils, has urged young Wilson not to get too carried away with his career so far, and to look at Liverpool wonderkid Raheem Sterling as an example of a player who has been in the spotlight for the wrong reasons recently.

He wrote in his Stoke Sentinel column: "James need look no further than Raheem Sterling to see how a lad a year or two in front of him, and seemingly with the world at his feet, can quickly hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

"As a player, he's got a bit of pace and clearly has a knack for scoring if you look at his record in various youth teams. He's made a goalscoring impact for the first team last season and has made three sub appearances so far this term.

"But if he doesn't know it already, he's about to find out that the biggest jump for any player is into that first team. And when you first get a chance you're getting it because you've shown promise, not because you've arrived."

United are set to face local rivals Manchester City this Sunday and with doubts surrounding Wayne Rooney's fitness, Wilson could be rewarded with another seat on the bench for the derby.
