Former Glasgow Rangers and AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso could be heading to a club near you after stepping down as coach of Greek side OFI Crete.
Gennaro Gattuso, the man who may dream of one day returning to Ibrox as Rangers manager, is out of work again after stepping down from his role as coach of Greek side OFI Crete over the weekend.
The 36-year-old has endured mixed fortunes since hanging up his boots with short stints at Swiss club FC Sion and later Palermo to his name.
Gattuso was in charge of Crete for 18 months before quitting the club in the wake of a 3-2 loss to Tottenham’s recent Europa League opponents Asteris Tripolis.
OFI Crete have had several off-the-field financial issues and are now just four points outside of the relegation zone, having lost three of their last five in the league in a situation that has proven too much for the Italian to bear.
Speaking in a press conference held yesterday, Gattuso said:
"It’s difficult for me to continue this experience. I put passion and strength into this and I’m sorry, but I cannot continue.
"I spent four incredible months in a marvellous city with wonderful fans. I cannot continue to carry this situation on my shoulders alone."
The Italian’s next destination remains unknown but the World Cup-winner would undoubtedly relish the chance to return to Glasgow, having earned himself a special place in the hearts of Rangers fans, following a season-long stint at the club.
Two years ago the Daily Record revealed that Gattuso had been in contact with the Gers regarding a possible return as a player.
"Rino talked with Ally [McCoist] on the telephone. They know each other very well and like and respect each other. Now we have to work to see if something can happen," Gattuso’s agent Andrea D’Amico confirmed at the time.
Though he may have failed to make a return to the club as a player, there could one day be room for him again on the Rangers bench, with speculation continuing to mount surrounding the future of McCoist.
Could Gattuso take on a coaching role at the club or perhaps become manager one day?
