Redknapp: These two players benefit most from Alex Song at West Ham

Jamie Redknapp has been left purring over the form of Alex Song at West Ham United.

Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur star Jamie Redknapp has praised Alex Song following the West Ham midfielder’s performance against Manchester city over the weekend.

Song was integral to the Hammers in a 2-1 win, as he helped to nullify the main threats coming from the Manchester City midfield.

“After his master class against Manchester City, Premier League bosses will be kicking themselves for not taking a chance on Alex Song,” wrote Redknapp for the Daily Mail.

“His time at Arsenal and Barca has given him a wealth of knowledge – he is so good at drawing fouls and keeping possession to take the sting out of games. He has helped free up Mark Noble and Stewart Downing, and though he won’t get an assist in the stats, his pass to spark West Ham’s first goal was top class.”

Song was linked with moves to the likes of former club Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool over the summer but none of the trio were willing to take a chance on him.

That could have been due to the contract he wanted or the concerns over his fitness, but he looks comfortable back in the pace and physical nature of Premier League football.

There were a few raised eyebrows when Sam Allardyce decided to take a risk on him, but it appears to be paying off because he creates a rock in the middle of this West Ham team.

That allows the more creative players to go and focus on their attacking game and creating chances, as they look to put the opposition onto the back foot and keep them there.

He makes it difficult for any opposition side to play free flowing football against West Ham, which helps the defence contain teams and prevent them from building momentum in important games.

Long may his form continue.
