Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho sent fellow manager Sam Allardyce a congratulatory message following West Ham United’s victory over Manchester City.
Goals from Morgan Amalfitano and Diafra Sakho put the hosts on their away and despite David Silva halving the deficit late on, the East Londoners held on for a deserved three points.
The win cements West Ham’s position in the top four whereas the Citizens were left to rue yet another defeat, handing the initiative to title challengers Chelsea.
While Allardyce was in the midst of his post-match interviews with the press, the former Bolton boss was disrupted by a congratulatory text sent by Blues boss Jose Mourinho.
Keen to reveal what he said, Allardyce told reporters: “Jose has just texted me to say ‘Well done big man’. This shows how important it was for him, never mind for us.” He said, quoted by the Mirror.
“He goes to Manchester United knowing his team will go and perform at their best and if they win it makes the gap even bigger. The result wasn’t for him. It was for us and everyone at West Ham. It will benefit him if they go and get a result at Manchester United.”
The Blues travel to Manchester United on Sunday knowing a victory will take them eight points clear of challengers City and firmly in the driving seat for the Premier League title.
