Sunderland should not have released this goalkeeper in the summer

Kieren Westwood is shining for Championship side Sheffield Wednesday at the moment.

The last two Premier League games for Sunderland will be two fixtures that their goalkeeper Vito Mannone will want to forget and fast.

The Italian had a nightmare against Southampton in the 8-0 thrashing at St Marys while his woeful touch allowed Alexis Sanchez to tuck away a second for Arsenal at the Stadium of Light yesterday.

The former Arsenal stopper has had his good moments in between the sticks for The Black Cats but has also been decidedly dodgy on numerous occasions.

It makes a decision they made this summer look very foolish.

Sunderland snapped up Costel Pantilimon on a free transfer from Manchester City in the summer.

This summer Sunderland also decided not to keep hold of Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Keiren Westwood.

That is now looking like a big mistake. Westwood went on to join Sheffield Wednesday in the summer on a two-year deal. It has proven to be a master-class of a signing.

Westwood has been outstanding for The Owls this season earning a reputation as one of the best goalkeepers in The Championship so far and certainly not making an error such of the magnitude that Mannone has this campaign.

Sunderland clearly made the wrong choice this summer and Westwood is now out of their reach.

Perhaps it is time for Pantilimon.
