Today’s Premier League clash between Manchester United and Chelsea at Old Trafford promises to have goals.
Despite doubts over the fitness of Chelsea striker Diego Costa and United star Radamel Falcao, there will be enough top-class attacking players on the pitch to guarantee goals.
One of the players who could find his name on the scoresheet today is Juan Mata. The Spain international attacking midfielder joined the Red Devils from Chelsea in January of this year for a transfer fee of £37.1 million.
The 26-year-old has been largely underwhelming since his switch from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford, but he remains a brilliant player and could be handed a start today by United manager Louis van Gaal.
Mata will have fond memories of playing in this fixture. The former Valencia star is the last player to score in a United against Chelsea game at Old Trafford.
That goal came back on May 5, 2013. It was the former Real Madrid B player’s strike that proved to be the difference between two sides as Chelsea edged to a 1-0 victory. The game appeared to be edging to a goalless draw when Mata’s shot went in off Phil Jones and the post in the 87th minute.
Chelsea will be favourites to win today’s match, and one suspects that Van Gaal will be happy if Mata can do against his old club what he did against United in May 2013.
