Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says that Manchester United are in a fantastic position.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says the Blues’ upcoming opponents Manchester United are in a fantastic position under new boss Louis van Gaal.

The Red Devils have had a turbulent past 16 months since the retirement of former manager Sir Alex Ferguson and endured a terrible campaign on the pitch last season.

Their struggling performances and early cup exits cost former boss David Moyes his job as United finished the season in seventh spot and without European football for the first time in 25 years.

A summer of change beckoned and new boss Van Gaal oversaw a huge spending spree which saw the Old Trafford outfit splash out on more than £150 million worth of players.

While the transition and player bedding is expected to take to time, Champions league qualification is a must for van Gaal this season and their early season form has been rocky.

Ahead of Sunday’s clash between United and Chelsea, Blues boss Mourinho felt that in spite of United’s recent struggles the club remains in a fantastic position and backed their Dutch coach to succeed.

Man United are in a fantastic position. You are in a difficult position when you don’t have the funds to be behind the rebuilding of a team,” he is quoted by the official Chelsea site.

“When you have the funds you have to buy well and coach them well, and I know Louis [van Gaal] is capable of buying and coaching them well so they are fine.”

Ten points separate the two sides ahead of the clash at Old Trafford and both will have huge incentives to go looking for the three points.

A victory for Mourinho’s men will see his side move six points clear of second-placed Southampton, whereas three points for United will see them leapfrog rivals Liverpool and Arsenal and move into fifth spot.
