Cristiano Ronaldo ‘in touch’ with Manchester United ‘friend’

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has backed Angel di Maria to shine at Manchester United.

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has backed former teammate Angel di Maria to be a big success at Manchester United.

The Red Devils smashed their transfer record during the summer as they lured the Argentine international to Old Trafford for a £57.9 million transfer fee.

It was a deal which sent shockwaves across Europe and was met with disbelief in the Spanish capital as a result of Di Maria’s fabulous performances for Los Blancos last season.

In 27 La Liga starts last season, he notched an astonishing 17 assists with Portuguese winger Ronaldo the recipient on a number of occasions.

Madrid star Ronaldo hasn’t been surprised by Di Maria’s fast start to life at Old Trafford and believes that there is still plenty more to come from his former teammate.

“Angel di Maria has had an unbelievable impact on United already. He is a fantastic player and is going to be amazing for them in the future,” he is quoted as saying by the Daily Star.

“You have already seen with his attacking play and goals that he will be a big star for them. Angel was always an important player for Real Madrid in the big games – he always rises to the occasion.

“I have been in touch with him a few times since he joined United. He is my friend and we have sent text messages and spoken. I was so happy in Manchester and he will be too.

“I’m supporting Angel and wishing him the best. I had six fantastic years in Manchester. It was a great moment for me and my career to be there and I learned a lot.

“It is one of the biggest and best clubs in the world and I know Angel will be a big player there, too. Of course it’s going to be a big challenge for him but I’m 100 per cent sure he will be a massive success.”

Di Maria has so far started six Premier League games for United, scoring three goals and assisting a further four.

He is integral to Louis Van Gaal’s counterattacking style of play and will play a key role in United’s bid to finish in the top four this season.
