In 2009 Chelsea snapped up a talented youngster by the name of Nemanja Matic from Slovakian outfit MFK Kosice for £1.5 million. Just 19-years-old he signed a four-year-contract with the club and big things were expected.
However as many a young player is now discovering breaking into the Chelsea first team is difficult to say the least and for Matic it proved impossible. After just three substitute appearances for the London outfit he was loaned to Vitesse Arnhem for the 2010-11 season and never returned.
That is because when Chelsea decided they wanted to shell out on David Luiz of Benfica the Portuguese side were keen to be compensated in more than just cash - so asked for a player to be included in the deal. That player was Matic.
He then went on to become a phenomenon in the Portuguese league and when Jose Mourinho arrived back at Stamford Bridge, he wanted Matic to return as well.
Matic arrived back at Chelsea for £21 million in January 2014 and has since gone on to become a staple in the Chelsea starting XI.
His performances have earned widespread praise and it seems most have forgotten about the fact Chelsea had to pay a substantial amount to bring him back to London.
Of course they were not the only team keen. Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United were all linked with his signature before Chelsea took him back. One man thinks they all were right to show such interest.
Graeme Souness has waxed lyrical about the Serbian this weekend. The Liverpool legend stated:
“As a midfielder, you want to get your head up and hit balls in to your striker but who's the face looking back at you? It used to be [Claude] Makelele and now it is Matic. He's better than Makelele, has a better range of passing and will get around the pitch better.
“Maybe only when you play with him do you appreciate how good he is. He's exactly what Arsenal needed, maybe what Liverpool needed, what (Manchester) United needed."
One thing for sure, Arsenal fans would definitely agree with that assessment.
