Paul Scholes believes that Manchester United duo Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo can rise to the occasion against Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.
The defenders are likely to be the two centre-backs that United manager Louis van Gaal deploys against Jose Mourinho’s side at Stamford Bridge.
Jones and Rojo will be severely tested by a strong and in-form Chelsea side, but former United midfielder Scholes is confidence that they can hold their own.
‘I believe that in Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones they have the makings of a partnership at centre-half and Sunday will be the kind of test that defines them’, the 39-year-old wrote in The Independent.
‘Jones has the raw talent’, added Scholes. ‘Now it is up to him to show he has the character to tell people what he wants from them. Rojo can do the same. He is a very crisp passer of the ball and he has played in a World Cup final, albeit as a full-back.
‘There is no reason for him to look around that dressing room and feel inhibited about telling his team-mates what he wants from them’.
United’s defence has been strongly criticised for leaking goals, but the following stats do suggest that Jones and Rojo can stop Chelsea.
|Error Lead To Goal||Error Lead To Shot||Blocked Cross||Interception||Total Clearance||Total Tackle||Won Tackle||Apps||Mins|
The most noticeable stats of Jones is that he has a 100% tackles won record. That is very impressive from the 22-year-old England international.
However, it will be far from easy for the United defence against Chelsea, and everyone will have to be on the top their game.
