Filipe Luis says 'mentality' will make Chelsea Premier League champions

Filipe Luis is expected to make his first Premier League start for Chelsea at Manchester United on Sunday.

The Brazilian full-back has started two Champions League games, but, due to the impressive form of Cesar Azpilicueta, he has been kept out of their Premier League side.

Despite arriving at Stamford Bridge as a La Liga winner and Champions League finalist, the 29-year-old has struggled to disrupt the starting line-up head coach Jose Mourinho decided upon last season.

However, he is likely to make his first Premier League start of the season on Sunday, with the Blues traveling to Old Trafford to face Manchester United in a crucial clash. A victory could move Chelsea eight points clear of Manchester City in second place - dependant upon results elsewhere - and Luis is set to fill in the left-back position in the absence of Azpilicueta.

The Spaniard is to start his three-match suspension earned in the 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace, and Luis believes he is ready to step into the void - with the team mentality at Chelsea more important than individuals.

Speaking to Standard Sport, Luis said: “Any time I get a chance, I do my best to help my team-mates.

“This is the mentality all players have at Chelsea now.

“We want to be champions and don’t think as individuals. We only think about the team and maybe this mentality is what will make us champions.”

Luis is aware that he has had to wait for his chance, and he knows that it will be difficult to fill the role left by Azpilicueta - and Ashley Cole before him.

“Obviously Cesar is doing a great job and this season is doing fantastically.

“He is one of the best defenders in the world and I know it is really difficult to play in his place – Ashley Cole’s place as well. He always kept the level really high.”
