Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes left-back Alberto Moreno has been Brendan Rodgers’ best acquisition of the summer.
Joining from Sevilla in August for around £12 million, following several weeks of drawn-out negotiations, Moreno has earned commendable reviews in his eight appearances so far, standing out for his attacking output in particular.
Liverpool bolstered their squad with eight other first-team signings this summer in conjunction with the £75 million sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, with Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Emre Can, Lazar Markovic, Dejan Lovren, Mario Balotelli and Javi Manquillo all arriving at Anfield, and Lille loanee Divock Origi set to return next season, but the Spain international is the one who has impressed Carragher the most.
‘I really like Moreno. I think out of all the new signing, he is the one who looks the best,’ he revealed in an extensive interview with Spanish journalist Veronica Carralcazar.
‘At the moment he is rotating with Enrique and against Tottenham he scored that goal, which was fantastic, so he looks good.’
Carragher also likes what he’s seen from fellow Spaniard Javi Manquillo, who signed the week before Moreno on loan from Atletico Madrid until 2016, but warns that the right-back will have a tough time earning a regular spot in the line-up with all the competition for places.
‘Manquillo, I like him too. He doesn’t do anything fantastic, but he just does [a consistent] job,’ he said.
‘We have a few players who can play right-back at Liverpool so he has competition but I think he is here for two years on loan from Atletico Madrid, and Simeone is a fantastic defensive coach so he knows how to defend.
‘Overall I like the new Spanish players; I think they’ve been two of the best signing.’
