Arsenal morning news: Wenger to sign new deal for 1,000th game; Kallstrom debut?

Arsene Wenger Press Conference - 18/02/2014

All the latest news and gossip from The Emirates Stadium this morning.

Arsene Wenger is expected to sign a new deal with the club in time for his 1,000th game as Arsenal manager.

The Frenchman is currently working on rolling contracts and will sign a new one later this month - in time for the game against Chelsea.

He hinted at his desire to remain at the club this weekend.

Speaking ahead of the North London derby against Spurs he stated:

“I still have the energy and the excitement. I want to do well. I do not stay here because I have been here a long time but because I want to respond to the expectation of our fans. People want us to win the championship. People want us to win trophies and that is what I want to do.”

In other good news ahead of that game and Chelsea will be without three big names. Jose Mourinho could face an ‘in the stands’ suspension for the tie after he was removed from the technical area yesterday - in a game that also saw Willian and Ramires sent off.

Both Brazilian players will now miss the tie.

Kim Kallstrom is expected to make his debut for the club in some capacity this afternoon. The Swedish midfielder was signed on transfer deadline day - and it then emerged he needed to rest a pre-existing back problem picked up playing beach football.

But he has trained most of this week and with Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil all out injured is expected to play some part in the fixture.

Olivier Giroud just cannot stay out of the papers. Yesterday it was ‘revealed’ he held talks with some super agent - today, apparently, his wife wants him to leave Arsenal.

The relationship took a knock recently with allegations of cheating against the front-man.

Now it is believed his wife wants him to leave London and potentially head back to France.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich might have knocked Arsenal out of the Champions League last week - but it has not affected the friendship of Jerome Boateng and crocked star Mesut Ozil.

They snapped themselves at a friendly dinner yesterday - proving that what happens on the pitch, stays there.
