Spurs made joint-favourites to win the Europa League - Should they be?

Tottenham Hotspur have been made the bookies' joint-favourites for the Europa League, but should they be?

Tottenham Hotspur have become the joint-favourites to win the Europa League, after their eye-catching success against Asteras Tripoli last night.

The Greek club suffered a 5-1 defeat at White Hart Lane and it was clearly an impressive enough performance to see Spurs' odds shorten to win the competition.

Spurs are currently a 14/1, the same price as Inter, Fiorentina, Napoli and Sevilla, to win the competition, but do they deserve their tags of favourites to win?

Of course, the landscape of the Europa League changes somewhat when the third-placed Champions League sides drop into the competition, but it is an indication of the quality that Spurs are renowned to have that they have been installed as favourites at this early stage.

The side have moved into a commanding position in their group and they have now moved into the joint-favourites category.

The win over Asteras Tripoli - who are novices in the competition - is Spurs' first three points in the group-stages so far and they were rather lucky to avoid defeat against Besiktas in their last match.

Mauricio Pochettino's men have already shown that they can be exposed against quality opposition and although their success last night has made the headlines they will still need to improve to get to the latter stages of the competition.

Pochettino believes that Spurs can win a trophy in the near future, but it seems that it is still too premature to suggest that they will triumph in European competition, as they have a lot of progression to do before they can be considered as genuine contenders.
