After inviting Victor Valdes to train with the club as he continues his rehab from a knee injury, Spanish website Mundo Deportivo is now claiming Manchester United will push on and try to sign the Spaniard on a deal.
Valdes was thought to be set for a move to Liverpool, which fell through over concerns about his fitness and MD claims United have positioned themselves to take advantage.
“In a few days, he will have a medical examination and if that succeeds, a contract with United,” reports MD.
It’s an obvious risk for United to offer Valdes a long term deal for the same reasons that Liverpool seemingly pulled out of making an offer.
However, where United can benefit from any deal for the Spaniard is in relation to their current number one; David De Gea.
De Gea is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League and Valdes’ presence around the training ground and Old Trafford can help him in a number of ways.
Valdes has been performing at the highest level of the game than De Gea for much longer and he can provide insight into technique and position, which relates to how the back of United’s team will play.
Valdes is experienced in terms of the way Barcelona split their centre backs to be able to pass out from the back, which is a style of football similar to the three at the back system that LvG started the season with.
Valdes can also help De Gea deal with pressure and ensure that his confidence is maintained during periods where he isn’t performing so well for the club.
All in all, it’s a potential deal which makes sense all round if the report from MD is accurate.
