PSV Eindhoven boss Phillip Cocu was not happy with Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Memphis Depay after he scored on his return from injury against Panathinaikos in the Europa League.
Depay grabbed PSV’s only goal of the game and was promptly booked for his celebration when he removed his shirt.
The incident angered manager Cocu, who suggested that the decision by the young winger could come back to haunt PSV at a later stage of the competition.
“He should not do that. Now it doesn’t lead to a suspension but later in the tournament it could be an expensive card. I understand his reaction after injury but it was not smart,” Cocu is quoted by De Telegraaf.
Tottenham were strongly linked with making a move for Depay over the summer but the player revealed that he wanted to buckle down in Dutch football over the course of the season.
If he can carry on scoring goals and prevent himself from getting booked in the process, he’ll be an important player for PSV all season, possibly reigniting the interest from Tottenham this winter.
