The Mario Balotelli promise Rodgers may be wishing he stuck to

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers may be wishing he didn't sign Mario Balotelli, as he said he wouldn't back in August.

When asked in August whether Liverpool would sign Mario Balotelli this summer, Brendan Rodgers was adamant that he would not be coming to Anfield.

The press has linked the Reds with the Italian striker, but Rodgers was insistent that his destination would not be Merseyside.

“I was asked the question about Balotelli last week and spoke about what a talent he is and excellent player he is,” Rodgers said back in August. “But I can categorically tell you that he will not be coming to Liverpool."

In the end, Rodgers went back on his word, signing Balotelli for £16 million from AC Milan, but he may be wishing that he stuck to his original opinion.

It is no secret that Liverpool were on the hunt for a striker, following the departure of Luis Suarez, but it seems that Balotelli's arrival at the club is already heading towards a spectacular failure.

The 24-year-old is a match-winner at this best, but too often in the red of his new club, he has looked off the pace and disinterested.

Balotelli's touch, passing and finishing has been well short of the quality required, whilst he cuts a frustrated figure up-front for the side.

Against Real Madrid last night, in a 3-0 defeat, he was hauled off at half-time and the signs that the team were growing frustrated with his consistently poor performances were on show against QPR at the weekend.

On numerous occasions his Liverpool teammates were left angered by Balotelli's selfish streak, and failure to pass to them, at Loftus Road.

It is a worrying run of form, which he is showing no signs of breaking out of, and he seems to be crumbling under the weight of expectation.

A self-confident individual, many had tipped Balotelli to do a good job covering for Suarez, but the pressure is building on him.

The hope is that he will thrive under this increased scrutiny, but Rodgers may just be regretting his decision to reconsider the possibility of signing Balotelli back in August.
