The Tottenham star was keen to stress the importance of the Europa League fixture.
The 23-year-old has made most of his appearances in Europe this season, and scored his solitary goal came against Limassol in the Qualifying round.
Townsend has found himself backup to Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela for much of the Premier League campaign but did make it on to the pitch in Saturday's 4-1 loss to Manchester City.
Coming off the back of that defeat, Townsend is eager to see Spurs impress against the Greek outfit.
“We know we’ve got the quality to win our matches,” he said. “This is a game we need to win in front of our home crowd and we need to get three points.
Spurs are without a win in their two Europa League group games, having drawn against Partizan Belgrade and Besiktas.
Asteras on the other hand beat Partizan last time out, and now sit top of Group C with four points, something that is not lost on the England winger, despite the fact they're mid table in their domestic league.
“We’ve played against Partizan and Besiktas already in the group and for Asteras Tripolis to have done well against those sides and be top of the group after two games shows how much we need to take them seriously.”
