Silvestri vs Ikeme: How do the Leeds United and Wolves goalkeepers compare?

Leeds United host Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend in the Championship.

Leeds United host Wolves searching for their first win under head coach Darko Milanic, but don't bet on a high scoring contest.

That's due to the two highly talented goalkeepers on show, Marco Silvestri and Carl Ikeme.

Both Silvestri and Ikeme have been impressive this season, but the latter has helped his side to more clean sheets, with six to the Leeds star's four.

Wolves defender Richard Stearman believes Ikeme is the best in the Championship, telling the official Wolves website last month:

“You always think you’ve got a chance with the big man in goal.

“He’s been so good that he always gives us a chance of keeping it out the back of the net and the stats over the last couple of years show how well we’re doing defensively.

“I’m struggling to think of anyone better to be honest.”

Carl Ikeme 35 16 10 60% 4 14 6 13

So far this season however Leeds summer signing from Italy has made more saves than Ikeme, 16 more in total.

His goalkeeping has also been more spectacular, making twice as many diving saves, while he has also been more proactive in cutting out crosses.

  Save Percentage
Leeds 76%
Wolves 73%

Silvestri edges Ikeme by saving a higher percentage of shots, conceding 24 per cent of efforts on target, opposed to 27 per cent concede by the Wolves star. Only Derby County (78 per cent) have a higher save percentage than Silvestri.

It is only the Italian's first season in English football, and there is a real chance he will improve still. Already he is putting together a case to be regarded as one of the best in the division.
