Balotelli was subbed off at half-time in the 3-0 defeat but caused plenty of debate after deciding to swap his shirt with Real Madrid defender Pepe at half-time.
Not since Andre Santos did the same with Robin van Persie has a shirt swap caused such controversy.
After the game however Steven Gerrard showed him how the art of shirt swapping should be done.
Former team-mate and friend Alvaro Arbeloa approached Gerrard at the final whistle to ask for an exchange of shirts. Gerrard refused, insisting that they would do so in the tunnel, away from the fans after what was a poor performance from the Premier League outfit.
It would appear Gerrard stuck to his word.
Because this post on Arbeloa's official Instagram account would certainly suggest that he got his former team-mate's shirt after the game - the way it is supposed to be done...
