Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has suggested Lukas Podolski's fitness is the reason he has not been playing.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has suggested that a lack of fitness has been stopping him picking Lukas Podolski.

The German international scored his first goal of the season last night, coming on as a substitute to score an injury-time winner over Anderlecht.

He told Arsenal.com: "We know Podolski can always score. He is frustrated and I understand that of course. But he’s important as well and he showed that tonight and he will be important in the coming months.

"It took him a while to get back to a good physical level [after the World Cup] and now he’s nearly there."

Podolski returned to Arsenal late after the World Cup, but played far less at the tournament than club mate Per Mertesacker, who has been a regular since early September.

Wenger knows his players better than anybody however, and can assess Podolski's fitness levels with all sorts of technology at the training ground, and must have data to back up his assertions the popular forward is below par.

The good news is Wenger discussing Podolski being 'nearly' where he needs to be, and the goal will earn him more playing time and subsequently improve his match sharpness.
