Despite now being on their fourth manager of the league season, the Hornets are second in the table on 25 points - one point behind league-leaders Derby County.
But they could have been flying just a little higher had they not been pegged back by Nottingham Forest last night.
Slavisa Jokanovic's side held a 2-1 lead thanks to a first-half strike from Odion Ighalo and a second-half penalty from Matej Vydra and went into the Vicarage Road clash top of the table. But Stuart Pearce's Forest side pegged them back and Derby lead-frogged them thanks to a narrow 1-0 win at Blackpool.
"I think we played very well in the first 60 minutes. The last 30 minutes we lost a bit of tactical order and tried to win the game with hearts and not minds," Jokanovic told BBC Sport after the game.
That assessment is an interesting one, however, as the Watford boss had substituted the well-performing Ighalo and replaced him with a not-yet-fit Troy Deeney in the second half.
And many Hornets fans took to Twitter to question the decision after the match. That tactical disorder Jokanovic referred to may have been caused by his very own substitution. That's certainly how some supporters felt anyway...
One I'd question, but I can understand why it was done, is Deeney coming on. Ighalo playing well & Troy doesn't look too sharp. #watfordfc— Vital Watford (@VitalWatford) October 21, 2014
Unsure if it was the timing/players tiring, but TD coming on for Ighalo seemed to result in players aimlessly clipping forward #WatfordFC— Watford FC Forums (@WFCforums) October 21, 2014
@VitalWatford agree with that but at the time of the subbing, Vydra looked dead on his feet while it seemed Ighalo still could carry on.— Deano (@Deanouk73) October 21, 2014
#watfordfc thoughts: Ighalo taken off too early, Tozser different level, Bassong impressive, 4-3-3 exposes Parades too much, referee shit.— Joe Whitbread (@jwhitbread1) October 21, 2014
Fessi, Ighalo, Bassong impressed tonight, played some good football, always looked dangerous, shouldn't have bought Deeney on till last 10— Craig Tanner (@Tannerc10) October 21, 2014
I never ever ever thought I'd be saying this but Deeney shouldn't have came on for Ighalo so early #watfordfc— Lee Harris (@lee_harris6) October 21, 2014
Puzzled to why Ighalo went off. looked a decent passing side & then seemed to lob it to TD. Ref and Linesman=shocker pic.twitter.com/R7D2oZWoVx— iAmAHornet (@iAmAHornet) October 21, 2014
