Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier has revealed his football hero to be former Manchester United striker Eric Cantona.
However, rather than admiring Cantona’s silky skills and ability to perform in big games, Tottenham’s summer signing from Sporting Lisbon has suggested he grew fond of the Frenchman because they share the same name.
“When I was younger I always liked Eric Cantona. Mainly because he had my name but also just because of the way he was, he made me laugh and I liked him,” he told Tottenham’s YouTube Channel.
Dier, who plays in a completely different position to the former United front man, has been one of Tottenham’s most consistent players this season, which is remarkable considering his age and his lack of experience in English football.
If he can show the same sort of consistency as Cantona did during his Premier League career and make fans laugh for all the right reasons, he could go down as one of the club’s most popular players by the time he retires.
