The top five players linked with Manchester United this week

Manchester United have been linked with more players this week and here are five of the best...

The January transfer window is still quite some time away but the rumours surrounding potential Manchester United targets continue apace.

With Louis van Gaal’s side dropping another two points away to West Bromwich Albion on Monday evening, it was as clear as ever that the side need midfielder and defensive reinforcements if they want to reclaim trophies both domestically and abroad.

Below are the top five players to have been linked with United this week:

Sami Khedira

United were reportedly willing to offer the German international a £5.5million-a-year deal to get him ahead of a whole host of other alleged suitors including Arsenal and Chelsea.

The Real Madrid midfielder would be an excellent addition to van Gaal’s squad, provided he can steer clear of the injuries that have blighted his recent career.

Gerard Pique

Just when you thought the Pique rumours had faded they returned with a vengeance this week, with United once again tipped to bring the Barcelona defender back to Old Trafford.

Reports claimed Pique would walk straight into United’s starting XI – which is fairly obvious when you consider their current options – but this one remains rather unlikely.

From rather unlikely rumours to very unlikely ones, with United allegedly interested in the Real left-back despite already having Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo on their books.

It is truth that Shaw has not started the season in the best form while the Argentine has been used predominantly in the middle, but with United needing centre-backs and box-to-box midfielders this story makes little sense.

Fredy Guarin

The rumour mill darling is back making headlines once more, with reports claiming United could bring the Colombian to Old Trafford in January.

It appears Inter Milan have been trying to get the midfielder off their wage bill for a while now but given the other players linked with van Gaal’s side, Guarin would be a distinct second-best if he did ultimately sign.

Mats Hummels

And so to the dream signing – if an extremely unlikely one. Hummels has been again linked with United as Arsenal reportedly prepare to make their move.

Reports have claimed the Gunners see the Borussia Dortmund centre-back as the perfect addition to their squad, leaving many to ponder if United will make a move first and hope they can somehow pull off a masterstroke.
