The evidence which suggests Etienne Capoue is the Premier League's luckiest player

Tottenham Hotspur star Etienne Capoue has committed a high number of fouls but this stat suggests he's been lucky.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Etienne Capoue could well be the luckiest player in the Premier League.

There are two fascinating stats, which suggest the French holding players is either blessed to play in games with lenient referees or is able to talk himself out of a variety of difficult situations with match officials.

Leonardo Ulloa FW Leicester 18 8 662

Only two players have committed more fouls than Capoue in the Premier League this season, but the difference between Tottenham’s midfield man and the other players with 18 fouls is that he hasn’t received a booking yet from any official.

The number of fouls he’s committed can be explained through his position in front of the back four and his main job, which is to break up the play and make it difficult for Tottenham’s opponents to play freely.

As for why he’s not been booked yet, that could be any number of things; the mood of the referee, the types of fouls he’s committed. For example, it would be harsh for an official to show him a yellow card for an accidental hand ball.

Long may it continue as far as Spurs fans will be concerned but it’s an area Mauricio Pochettino will urge caution in relation to his player as the winter games come thick and fast, where Tottenham could do without suspensions.
