Southampton's Jose Fonte says that the fact that the side kept a clean-sheet against Sunderland at the weekend was more important the demolition to him.
Saints won 8-0 against a hapless Sunderland side, but Fonte says that it was imperative that they did not concede, despite all their goal-scoring prowess.
“It was great to see all the goals, but as we said at half time, the most important thing was the clean sheet," he said to the club's official site. "We had to keep our concentration and our focus to not concede. We scored eight and kept a clean sheet which was massive for us.”
“It was very pleasing, but we must keep our feet on the ground. It is only three points. It was one of those days where everything worked out in attack."
Southampton's win has been talked about a lot since the weekend, but their performance was won which confirmed their status as genuine Champions League contenders this season.
The side have been one of the most eye-catching teams in the Premier League throughout the campaign so far and a top four finish is already been touted as a possibility.
Although it will be hard for the side to break into the Champions League spots, it is certainly not an impossibility if they continue to show such attacking threat.
The next game they have comes against Stoke City at the weekend, where they will be aiming to keep their momentum up, but Fonte is keen to ensure that his teammates do not get carried away.
“We are pleased but already focusing on Stoke City," Fonte said. "The next game will always be the hardest game because Stoke will be careful in their approach.
“We believe in ourselves, obviously it is good to score a lot of goals for the confidence of the team, but we are experienced and we know it is just three points."
