The loss was particularly notable for watching Newcastle United fans due to Toon loanee Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa playing at centre-back for the Italians.
Until now the deal has looked a perplexing one, with Newcastle struggling in the Premier League relegation zone, and the Frenchman playing for Serie A title chasers and Champions League side Roma.
Last night was a game in which Yanga-Mbiwa threatened to reset that assertion, with a poor display against a rampant Bayern.
He was far from the only one at fault, with the entire backline, including former Chelsea star Ashley Cole, second best all evening against Pep Guardiola's side.
For Newcastle supporters, especially those who have maintained Yanga-Mbiwa was not the right player for the club, the display had an element of vindication about.
For context of course, a hammering at the hands of Bayern Munich will happen to many teams this season, and that is not to say Newcastle possess any defenders who would be able to shut out such a talented side.
Yet Yanga-Mbiwa may not quite be the player he was touted as being a few weeks ago. Here's a selection of reaction from fans to last night's result:
I liked Yanga-Mbiwa and thought he got Pardewed at #NUFC, but this is embarrassing.— AndyO (@Andyo26) October 21, 2014
Everyone still want Yanga Mbiwa back to solve #nufc defensive crisis?— Andrew (@AndrewJobson27) October 21, 2014
Pardew had Yanga-Mbiwa sussed all along. Well played Pards. #NUFC— D W (@SirDanWilson) October 21, 2014
7-1 now, am starting to feel bad for Roma. At least Yanga MBiwa is getting some good experience conceding before he comes back to us #NUFC— Darren Gladwell (@DarrenGladwell) October 21, 2014
Well at least we've learned not to play Yanga-Mbiwa against a Bayern Munich team any time soon #nufc— Kane Robinson (@kaneorobinson) October 21, 2014
