Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard: Raul wanted me at Real Madrid

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has revealed that Real Madrid legend Raul wanted him to join the Spanish giants.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has revealed that Raul wanted him to move to Real Madrid back in 2009.

The Madrid legend personally asked the Englishman following Los Blancos’ 4-0 defeat to the Reds at Anfield in the Champions League on March 10, 2009.

Gerrard was one of the stars of the show as he gave a captain’s performance for Liverpool, who won the last-16 tie 5-0 on aggregate to progress to the quarter-finals.

Former England international Gerrard has now revealed that while coming off the pitch, Raul, then at Madrid, asked him if he would like to join the Spanish giants.

‘He mentioned about trying to play in Spain one day’, he told Sky Sports. ‘He mentioned if there would be any chance I would play for Madrid.

‘I was obviously very flattered. He is a big hero of mine, I have watched him for many, many years and I used to love watching him play’.

If Gerrard wanted, then he could have moved to Madrid in the summer of 2009. During that period, the Englishman was one of the best midfielders in the world, but it was noble of him to continue playing for Liverpool – one of the greatest one-club players.
