A former Liverpool player has been speaking about their striking options and who they should have moved for in the last transfer window.
Brendan Rodgers signed Mario Balotelli for £16million in the summer but the Italian international has failed to find his form to date, scoring just one goal in nine appearances and missing a glaring chance against Queens Park Rangers last time out.
Following the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, it was always going to be a challenge for Liverpool to replace the prolific Uruguayan, but Matteo believes they should have looked elsewhere rather than bringing in the former AC Milan forward.
“It’s difficult to replace Luis Suarez but Brendan should have tried to replace his goals,” Matteo said. “Liverpool should have tried to sign someone like Falcao. We had the money.
“Liverpool have not bought particularly well. People thought signing Mario Balotelli for £16million was a good buy but he hasn’t produced. Liverpool needed to get a player who was guaranteed to score 20 to 30 goals a season.”
The way things are looking, Balotelli will not get even close to that, with his numerous goal-scoring efforts going everywhere except in the back of the net…at least for now.
The 24-year-old’s performance against QPR was arguably his worst since arriving at the club, and Liverpool fans have had to watch while Falcao headed to Manchester United.
Although that said, the Colombian international has only scored one goal to date, and has been used relatively sparingly by Louis van Gaal. But there is no doubt the on-loan star is a considerably better option up front than Balotelli.
It is easy for Matteo to say Liverpool should have moved for someone like Falcao, but they didn’t, so the trick is to get the best out of what they have until January, when Rodgers must make a bold move in the transfer window if at all possible.
