Could Dead or Alive 5 Last Round be free-to-play like Killer Instinct?

Dead or Alive 5

Rumours have surfaced of a free-to-play version of Dead or Alive 5 Last Round for PS4 and Xbox One in 2015.

A recent report from eventhubs.com via Games Talk has said that Koei Tecmo are due to announce a release date of 19th February 2015 Dead or Alive 5 Last Round in Japan. The official announcement is due by way of some Japanese gaming magazines, according to anonymous sources who currently have an early copy of one of the mags.

Dead or Alive 5 Last Round was announced on 31st August this year, and is heading to the west in spring 2015 on PS3 and Xbox 360 by way of digital release, with the PS4 and Xbox One versions getting physical and digital releases. However, within the report from Games Talk it says that there will be free-to-play versions on the PS4 and Xbox One too, allowing both paid and free players to fight against each other.

The report goes on to say that two stages will be detailed in the magazines too, with 'Danger Zone' and 'Crimson' returning from previous DoA games.

For the characters it's claimed that there's one 'that series fans have been eagerly awaiting for', and also another who's said to be 'the biggest'. I'll let you figure out what 'biggest' means.

We imagine a free-to-play Dead or Alive could use a similar format to Killer Instinct on Xbox One, with a small number of characters being available to all for free, and additional purchases unlocking specific content. But of course these reports are not official at the moment, so we should wait to hear something from the Team Ninja devs or Tecmo Koei.

The announcement trailer for Dead or Alive 5 Last Round released early last month is below.
