Former Liverpool and Real Madrid star Michael Owen: Why Anfield is better than Santiago Bernabeu

Former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker Michael Owen explains the difference between Anfield and the Santiago Bernabeu on Champions League nights.

Michael Owen has played for both Liverpool and Real Madrid, but it is at Anfield that he enjoyed his European nights more.

The former England international striker was on the books of the Premier League outfit from 1991 until 2004, and was hugely successful at Anfield.

Besides winning the FA Cup, the League Cup and the UEFA Cup once each during his time at Liverpool, Owen also featured in some great Champions League matches.

Owen also played Champions League football as a Madrid player during the 2004-05 season, but he says that playing European games at the Santiago Bernabeu did not give him as much satisfaction as playing those matches at Anfield.

‘Despite the fact that Real Madrid are the most successful European Cup winners of all time, I personally think that famous European nights at Anfield simply cannot be beaten for atmosphere or all-round sporting theatre’, Owen wrote on Sportlobster.com.

‘It's as if the crowd know that these games will be talked about for generations to come and never has the saying ‘The crowd were like a twelfth man’ been more true’.

Anfield is indeed one of the most famous football stadiums in the world, and Liverpool fans are certainly delighted to have Champions League football back on their turf.
