Derby County went to the top of the Championship with a win against Blackpool yesterday.

Chris Martin’s penalty against Blackpool was enough to secure Derby County a 1-0 win, which sent them to the top of the Championship.

Martin has been one of the most consistent strikers in the Championship this season and he was coolness personified as he took the important spot kick which secured an important three points for the Rams.

The ultimate aim for Derby this season is to get back into the top flight and it will be interesting to see if they can defend their position over the rest of the season.

Manager Steve McClaren was delighted after the game, which allowed him to demonstrate the strength of the squad at his disposal.

“I believe the squad is stronger than last season. I mean we're leaving out players and bringing in internationals in the likes of Jeff Hendrick. That's pleasing,” he said after the game.

“It's the maturity of the group too. We wouldn't have got six clean sheets on the bounce last season.”

“The maturity of the squad, knowing how to win and what it takes, there's determination in there. We were a young team, we still are a young team but they are showing that maturity.”

The obvious worry now for McClaren is going to relate to how his side defends their position at the top.

Local rivals Nottingham Forest were top for the opening part of the season, but they were targeted by opposition sides, which saw their form slump and they’ve now slipped down to sixth place.

Derby need to string out a positive sequence of results over the course of November and heading into a busy winter schedule because if they are at the top of the league at the turn of the year, they can start thinking about Premier League football all over again.

Here’s how Derby fans reacted on Twitter to going to the top of the league.
