On loan Manchester United winger Nani scored in the Champions League in midweek but turned in a typically frustrating display.
He could not prevent Sporting Lisbon from losing 4-3 to German side Schalke, and they now have just one point from a possible nine after three games.
Nani could not successfully direct a single cross for his teammates, completing only a moderate 71 per cent of his overall passes.
He told UEFA.com: "We are disappointed because all the work done to get back to 3-3 has been dissipated by the final goal.
"It was a great performance by the whole team and now the standings are not easy, let's see what will happen. I believe that the whole attitude of the team has been excellent, we were really compact."
It already looks as though his Champions League journey will not continue to the group stages, with Chelsea likely to wrap up the group as winners.
Only a win in the next match against Schalke will turn their prospects around, but they are already four points behind the German side, and one behind Slovenians Maribor.
