Newcastle midfielder Jack Colback says he thought the side would let their lead against Leicester City slip.
Newcastle United midfielder Jack Colback says that he believed Leicester City were going to equalise against them at the weekend.
Newcastle took the lead through Gabriel Obertan fairly late-on in the match, but Colback had a feeling that Leicester would grab an equaliser because of the struggles they have had so far this season.
In the end, his concerns were unwarranted though and the midfielder believes this is because of the fight that the whole team showed.
"When we went 1-0 up and they had a few chances, at that point I thought to myself the way things are going for us they are going to equalise," he said to the Chronicle. "We dug and showed everyone is fighting for this club. People were throwing themselves at the ball.”
The win serves as a massive relief for the football club, who have been under severe pressure for their poor form.
They aim now has to be to push on and Colback is aiming to do that against Tottenham Hotspur, when they travel to London next weekend.
"The fans deserve better but hopefully this win can set us off and we can win some more game," he said. "We have to build on this. In football it is not doom and gloom all season, a couple of wins can change the feeling. We have to focus on Spurs and hopefully get a win there."
“It is difficult when you are not winning games, really difficult. It can get hard when you are playing out here, but in fairness to the fans they have been top drawer. They have stuck with us and we have got the win for them. It has to be a platform to move forward."
