Central defender Gerard Pique would reportedly be guaranteed a place in the Manchester United starting line-up.
United are thought to be keen on a deal for their former player, with reports this morning suggesting they are toying with the idea of a £20 million offer to give him a way out of the Nou Camp this winter.
Pique has fallen down the pecking order at Barcelona and the Star suggests he could be open to a move if he can convince his family into accepting it.
“Pique would be guaranteed his place at United, where Van Gaal is attempting to rebuild a team capable of getting the club back to the top of the game,” reports the Star.
“It is understood she (Shakira, his wife) is reluctant to move to Manchester, which means United bosses will have to hand Pique a bumper deal in order to prize him out of the Nou Camp.”
Louis van Gaal deserves big credit for the signings he pulled off during the summer transfer window, but one of the areas he didn’t bring in a new player was in the centre of his defence.
That has left pundits such as former United defender Gary Neville suggesting that the defence is exposed this season and Pique could inject the calm and level headed experience into the back four, which the side needs.
He’d be able to form a solid spine in defence around which new and younger players could develop without jeopardising the integrity of the side.
Letting him originally leave Old Trafford is seen as one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s biggest ever blunders during his time at the club, but the prospect of his return makes sense on multiple fronts if a deal can be agreed.
There are plenty of obstacles to over come for this transfer to happen but everything suggests United are going to have a go at pulling it off.
