Report: Ex-Chelsea boss plotting to get Torres

There are reports in the German media that Roberto Di Matteo is hoping to pull of an unlikely swoop for Chelsea exile Fernando Torres.

Fernando Torres hasn't made the best start to life at AC Milan, but it seems that he still has an admirer in the form of Roberto Di Matteo.

Di Matteo has just taken over at German side Schalke and will be in the process of working out his strategy for the January transfer window.

According to German newspaper Bild, the former Chelsea boss has already identified the need for new striking options and he is determined to sign Torres.

Torres joined AC Milan from Chelsea on a two-year loan deal during the summer and was greeted with great enthusiasm at San Siro.

But the Spaniard has only found the net once so far and is in danger of being banished to the bench, which raises questions about his future, given that he moved to Serie A in order to get regular first-team football.

Di Matteo apparently has a good working relationship with Torres and could offer him more of a guaranteed role at Schalke.

It still seems unlikely that Torres would move on so quickly, but it wouldn't affect Chelsea and if Milan boss Pippo Inzaghi decides he will be bench fodder with the Rossoneri a switch could be mutually beneficial.
