Jamie Carragher believes that Manchester United should sign Mats Hummels to solve their defensive problems.
The Sky Sports pundit took part in an impromptu question and answer session on social media site Twitter this morning and suggest that Hummels would be a good signing for United.
Hummels has been linked with a move for Old Trafford for some time now and is reportedly still on Louis Van Gaal's wishlist.
Despite work to strengthen this area of the pitch, there is still a feeling that the Red Devils are lacking a world-class centre-back and Hummels could fill this void.
United had tracked the Borussia Dortmund defender throughout the summer transfer window, but no deal materialised and Carragher clearly feels that was an error.
Dortmund have started the Bundesliga season poorly, so it remains to be seen whether United will try and capitalise on this by making an offer in January.
They will be expected to make defensive recruits in the next transfer window, as their porous backline has continued despite a number of additions.
Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Daley Blind haven't solidified the team up as much as hoped yet and the presence of a commanding defender like Hummels could be the difference between a successful and disappointing season.
Carragher also believes that it was an error that the side allowed Nemanja Vidic to go in the summer.
Vidic was not offered a contract extension at Old Trafford and headed to Inter Milan, and Carragher thinks he still had something to offer to Van Gaal's current team.
