Bayern Munich produced arguably the best performance of the season anywhere in Europe this season when they hammered AS Roma 7-1 in Rome on Tuesday.
Pep Guardioala’s side were in control of the Champions League Group E clash from start to finish and recorded their biggest ever away win.
Arjen Robben was on song at the Stadio Olimpico, scoring twice and having a number of chances to complete his hat-trick. Robert Lewandowski, Mario Gotze, Thomas Muller, Franck Ribery and Xherdan Shaqiri were also on target for Bayern, while former Arsenal attacker Gervinho scored a ‘consolation goal’ for Roma.
Bayern’s performance was truly majestic, but, strangely enough, former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel seemed to be most awed by their custodian Manuel Neuer.
During the match, the ex-Denmark international stated that it was Germany international Neuer who was keeping Bayern in the game.
Bayern leads Roma 5-0 and Neuer is near enough best Bayern player...!! Nothing iffy about his performance..#UEFAChampionsLeague— Peter Schmeichel (@Pschmeichel1) October 21, 2014
Roma has scored, without Neuer it would have been 5-5, still only 1-5. #UCLTrophyTour— Peter Schmeichel (@Pschmeichel1) October 21, 2014
De Sanctis, Roma goalkeeper not having the best of days. Feel sorry for him. #UEFAChampionsLeague— Peter Schmeichel (@Pschmeichel1) October 21, 2014
Neuer did indeed play well against Roma and made four saves – as many as his opposite number Morgan De Sanctis – but the damage was already done at the other end inside the first 30 minutes of the match.
