Aston Villa may have lost 3-0 to Everton at the weekend, but Paul Lambert still believes that Tom Cleverley and Alan Hutton were outstanding during the match.
On the face of it, the defeat looks a heavy one, but Lambert was determined to take the positives out of the match.
The performances of Cleverley and Hutton were the brightest sparks of the day, but Lambert was also pleased with the way that his two returning stars - Ron Vlaar and Christian Benteke - performed.
"I think Tom Cleverley and Alan Hutton were outstanding," he said to the club's official site. "I thought Ron Vlaar did well enough for his first game back and Christian Benteke did well enough for his first proper game back."
"But I thought we had too many lads below par. I think to win a Premier League game you've got to have at least nine on their game."
Villa have made a good start to the season and still remain in the top-half of the table, but they have had a poor run more recently.
The side have lost their last four games, with some heavy defeats being involved, and they know that an improvement will be needed soon if they are to build on their impressive start.
Lambert believes that the fact they are still above Everton, despite a defeat at Goodison Park, is evidence of the quality of their showings so far and he wants them to maintain their high standards.
"We're still above Everton and they're classed as a top six or seven team," he said.
"Our start has been really good. We've had a run on games where it's been gruelling."
"We didn't play well enough to win the football game against Everton but the progression from last year in the side is massive."
"We've got a really good side. I think if you play at the level we have been playing - taking out Saturday - then we'll win more games than we lose."
Villa's next game, where they will be looking to get back on track, comes against QPR on Monday.
