Liverpool face arguably the toughest test possible when they line-up against the current Champions League holders Real Madrid tomorrow night.
The Spanish club have enough firepower to strike fear into any club, but with Liverpool's defence looking particularly shake this season many are anticipating a very difficult night for the Reds at Anfield.
Nevertheless Liverpool and England hero John Barnes is hopeful that his former side are capable of getting something out of the game, and has called on the club's renowned supporters to summon the atmosphere of their 04/05 Champions League final win over AC Milan.
He told the Liverpool Echo: "It will be a sensational night. We didn't have any Champions League last year, and I suppose that the glory days of the 1970s and 1980s have not been here for a long time.
"The fact that we are back in the Champions League, and the fact that it's Real Madrid, will mean this will be as exciting as any game, even Istanbul.
"You only need to look at Istanbul to see what the Liverpool fans can give you when you need them. That night, if the fans had turned against Liverpool and not supported, they wouldn't have come back and won.
"I expect the same on Wednesday, and no matter how the game is going, as long as the fans support to the end I am sure they will get a positive result."
Liverpool will have been boosted by the news that Welsh wizard Gareth Bale is injured and has not travelled to Merseyside with the rest of the Real Madrid. Although that still leaves reigning Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo and the rest of Real's star-studded squad for the Reds to deal with.
