Long term £25m United target speaks about comeback after 435 days injured

Ilkay Gundogan

Ilkay Gundogan is pleased to be back in action for Borussia Dortmund.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan in the past - rumours that have come back to the fore recently.over the past.

The German international signed a contract extension until 2016 with Dortmund in April - although he remains linked with a £25 million move to a club he once admitted it was his ‘dream’ to play for.

Recently however any Manchester United interest has been futile as Gundogan has been blighted by persistent injury problems.

He picked up a back injury in the opening game of the 2013-14 season against FC Augsburg - meaning he only played 57 minutes of football in the last campaign.

A January comeback for the player failed to after another nerve problem in his back and he underwent 'career saving' spinal surgery in the summer.

But now he is back.

His team's woeful Bundesliga form continued with a 2-1 defeat against FC Koln on Saturday but Gundogan started the game, playing 89 minutes, his first game in 435 days!

He has now spoken about his comeback, insisting that while he was pleased with his performance, he would have preferred a better result:

"I thought I settled into the game well and I didn't get frustrated if things didn't go my way immediately. I just tried to do what the coach had told me before the game. Obviously I wish we'd got a better result, though."

Gundogan will now be hoping to face Galatasaray in the Champions League where, bizarrely, Dortmund seem immune to the problems that have besieged them in the league.
