Relief was the overriding emotion for Liverpool yesterday as they made it back-to-back wins for the first time in the Premier League this season with a dramatic 3-2 win over Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road.

Next up is Real Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday night for the Reds where a defeat could leave them in a perilous situation in their Champions League group, and vice-captain Jordan Henderson has said the Reds have to raise their game for the clash with the European Champions.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “It wouldn’t matter if it was Real Madrid or whoever next, we need to improve in all areas after that.

“We’ll have a couple of days recovery and prepare for that game.

“They’ve got some great players but you want to be playing against the best players and the best teams in the world. That’s how you improve as a player.

“We have to go out there with no fear and focus on playing the way we know we can.

“Our performance level needs to be high. We’re capable of getting a good result.”

Liverpool legend Jimmy Case has branded striker Mario Balotelli as 'a waste of space' as he missed a golden opportunity to break his Premier League scoring duck in the second half of yesterday's game - as he blasted the ball over the bar from close range with the goal at his mercy.

Case is quoted in the Daily Mirror, saying: “To be bitterly honest Mario Balotelli is a waste of space at the minute. He is just not a team player.”

Liverpool are interested in Marseille winger Andrew Ayew according to the Daily Mirror, with the Ghana international reportedly rejecting a new contract at the French league leaders.

Ayew is also attracting the interest of Everton, Swansea City, Hull City and West Ham United according to the report.
