Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has delivered news which will come as a blow to Arsenal’s hopes of signing Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira in the winter transfer window.
Despite being in the final season of his contract, Balague has reaffirmed that Real have no plans to sell the in-demand German international, and are prepared to let him leave for free in the summer.
While Khedira himself is said to desire a move, the club are even preparing a fresh contract offer, with manager Carlo Ancelotti stressing his admiration for the World Cup-winner over the weekend.
‘The story from the club is that they’re offering him a new contract,’ Balague told Sky Sports News HQ.
‘He still hasn’t said yes to that which would obviously mean he’d go for free at the end of the season.
‘Ancelotti wants him to stay until the end of the season and the plan of the club remains to keep him until then, even with the possibility of him leaving for free.
‘They will try to convince him to stay, but it looks very unlikely.’
Linked with a move from the Bernabeu since the summer, Khedira has long been considered the prime answer to Arsene Wenger’s bid to land a defensive-oriented midfielder, with an approach in the winter thought to have been on the agenda.
Both Chelsea and Manchester United have emerged as other potential suitors, however, while a possible summer departure could add even more competition to the race with no fee required.
