Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has explained by Liverpool’s proposed move for ex-Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes has broken down.
The Reds were thought to be close on a deal, with several sources suggesting that a deal would be completed before the end of this month.
However, Balague has revealed through his BleacherReport column, that no imminent Anfield move is on the cards for the experienced Spaniard.
“Like many love matches before it, both parties had their doubts. Victor Valdes, who has admitted to both Liverpool and friends his admiration and even "love" for the English club and even the Premier league, wanted to see if Liverpool could still be competitive this season while the club needed to know if the 'keeper was going to recover from the knee injury that he is still suffering from.”
While there’s no doubt that the experience and quality of Valdes would have been useful at the club, Brendan Rodgers has one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League in the form of Simon Mignolet.
The Belgian has stepped up whenever he’s been challenged at Anfield and could easily becoming the top shot stopper in England’s top flight, and the Champions League, over the next few seasons.
It’s unfortunate for Valdes that he suffered such a bad injury at the back end of last season, which saw his move to Monaco fall apart and seems to be the reason Liverpool haven’t moved to offer him a long term deal.
“I have spoken to a number of the Barcelona players about the situation and they all tell me to a man that no one is presently in touch with Valdes.”
If Liverpool are going to sign a shot stopper, with the intention of keeping Mignolet on his toes and making him one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be Valdes.
