Manchester United are reported to be monitoring Torino full-back Matteo Darmian as they bid to bolster their defence during the January transfer window.
The Red Devils have suffered an injury crisis at the back so far this season and have relied on rookies Patrick McNair and Tyler Blackett to plug the gaps.
United boss Louis Van Gaal has made no secret of his desire to improve things at the back and a swoop in January for a recognised defender appears likely.
According to a report in The Mirror, one player who the Old Trafford outfit are considering moving for is Torino’s £15 million-rated Matteo Darmian.
“Manchester United are on the trail of Torino’s Italy full-back Matteo Darmian," states the report. "Boss Louis van Gaal has had the versatile Darmian extensively scouted and is considering making a January offer.
“The Dutchman is desperate to sign a right-back and has long been impressed by the 24-year-old, a two-footed player who can operate in either full-back position."
Darmian is a full Italian international, making his debut in May 2014 and going on to start for the Azzurri during their 2-1 victory over England at the World Cup in Brazil.
Although initially starting his career as a centre-back, the Serie A star now operates in either full-back position and has been described as fast, versatile and tactically aware.
