Manchester United and Arsenal-linked Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho: Thierry Henry is my hero

Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, who was linked with Manchester United and Arsenal in the summer transfer window, reveals his two footballing heroes.

Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho has named Arsenal legend Thierry Henry as one of his heroes when he was growing up.

Former France international striker Henry is one of the greatest players of all time and was on the books of the Gunners from 1999 to 2007.

During that period, Henry, now at New York Red Bulls, established himself as a world-class centre-forward and a regular goalscorer.

Carvalho, who was linked with Manchester United and Arsenal in the summer transfer, has now revealed that Henry is one of his all-time favourite players.

‘There were two players I always liked: Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry', he told the Champions Magazine. 'They were my references, the players I always followed’.

Carvalho’s game is different to that of Henry’s – the former is a defensive midfielder, while the latter is a striker - but the 22-year-old is rated as one of the most promising youngsters in Europe.

The Portugal international has a long way to go before he can come anywhere close to the success Henry achieved as a footballer, but given Carvalho’s talent and age, he could well become of the best players in the world in the future.
